Competitive Motion in FIRST Tech Challenge

My Project

Every year students ages 12-18 across the globe compete in the FIRST Tech Challenge robotics competition. In this challenge students engage in the engineering design process to develop mechanisms and code required for their robots to complete specific competition objects. This year, we have a record number of 6th graders joining our team, and they need a competitive driving base to assemble and learn from.

Help give them the basic element for developing a competitive FTC bot - a mecanum driving base!

With this, they can build from the ground up a driving base and learn the coding process to ensure each of the four drive wheels operates independently of each other.

These strafer (mecanum) driving bots are pretty incredible. They have four mecanum wheels, each equipped with its own motor. These motors are coded in such a way as to allow the bot to drive and turn as normal, but also strafe left and right. This is done by writing a code that says something to the effect of "when right joystick is pressed left, assigned positive power to front wheels, and negative power to back wheels". With the wheels turning in opposite directions, it creates a draw on the wheels that causes the robot to slide to the left or right. It's pretty incredible, and our incoming 6th grade robotics students are having blast!
