This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am a passionate National Board Certified Education Specialist working in a high school setting. Our school is a Title I school serving a diverse population. The students I work with are determined and strive to persevere through all academic challenges.
As the new semester begins, I would like to refresh my classroom so students feel comfortable and relaxed—ready to have heart-to-heart discussions about compassion in school and their community.
On May 25, 2001, Erik Weihenmayer became the first blind person to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. In 2008, he climbed Carstensz Pyramid on the island of Papua New Guinea. Using Erik Weihenmayer's Touch the Top curriculum, I will bring his story to life in the classroom with our new desk and chairs, using this curriculum as a powerful example for students as they navigate their own paths, pushing past limits imposed on them and showing compassion for those who are different.
Students will learn to see and understand compassion through Erik Weihenmayer’s virtual visit with our classroom. As we progress through his curriculum and explore the idea of pushing through limits with compassion, students will be engaged and focused at their new desks and chairs. These desks will create a space for real conversation and understanding of compassion.
The students in my classroom are working at different levels and have a variety of abilities. They will learn to work toward alleviating the suffering of others through group work and discussion, practicing the art of pushing their limits in a compassionate environment. As we congregate around the table, students will begin to understand each other. I will measure their understanding through the questions they compose—questions that seek to uncover Erik’s struggles, failures, and ultimate success.
This intentional focus time will take place in our classroom at the new desks.
