My Project

My fourth graders are inquisitive, curious, and love learning! They love learning the content but they're also learning to be compassionate and caring individuals. As an educator, I do my best to guide my students to see the world through the eyes of another person and be empathic learners through the books we read, the social-emotional routines we incorporate into our day, and through class conversations. Compassionate individuals will make our community and world a kinder place.

Books are a magical launching point to help my students learn to see the world through the eyes of another person.

The book, A Flood of Kindness, acknowledges difficult feelings and encourages children to be kind to those who need a friend and to help others in whatever way they can, no matter how small. The book paints a picture of empathy and compassion to encourage others to take action.

Compassionate acts can include words, gestures, and actions that show you care and uplift others. My fourth graders will be able to help others as they learn about compassion to understand they have the power to help others by writing thoughtful notecards with encouraging words to show they understand. Their notecards may include being happy for someone else's success, forgiving others for mistakes, accepting people for who they are, or simply saying thank you.

As a reflective educator, I will evaluate and measure my students' understanding of compassion by observing them in action, listening in on their discussions, and reading reflections they write in their notebooks. My hope is to see growth in compassionate acts and improved relationships with others as they try to see the world through the eyes of another person.
