This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our 4th-grade class will explore the meaning of compassion through a project called “Compassion Through Kindness Kits.” Compassion is the ability to see the world through someone else’s eyes and take action to help. This project gives students a chance to understand the challenges others face and find meaningful ways to show care and kindness.
To help students build empathy, we will begin by reading stories about children experiencing homelessness, illness, or other hardships.
I will start with "Fly Away Home” by Eve Bunting. and also “Be Kind” by Pat Zietlow Miller. We will invite a guest speaker from a local shelter to share their experiences and lead a discussion. Students will also participate in a “Walk in Their Shoes” activity, where they imagine what it might feel like to go without a home, regular meals, or basic comforts. These experiences will help students see life from another person’s point of view.
After building understanding, students will take action by creating Kindness Kits. These will include small comfort items such as socks, snacks, toiletries, and uplifting handwritten notes or drawings. Students will work in teams to collect items, pack the kits, and write messages of encouragement. The completed kits will be donated to a local shelter or hospital.
We will measure student growth in compassion using reflection journals, where students will write about what they’ve learned. We’ll also hold class discussions to hear different perspectives. Finally, each student will use a Compassion Rubric to reflect on their ability to empathize, take kind actions, and explain the meaning of compassion.
This project helps students connect feelings to action. By learning to recognize the needs of others and respond with care, they will better understand what it means to be compassionate, both in school and in the world around them.
