This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The students I work with are full of joy and are kind! Although some of my students have limited resources and have behavioral, medical, and academic needs, they crave learning and structure. Many are balancing English as a second language, so meaningful materials that appeal to all learning styles are key. Some of the students live in group homes or foster homes and it can be a challenge to find motivating activities that will engage them. In addition, my students enjoy hands-on learning materials that they can manipulate to gain sensory input.
They show compassion for one another through the kind words they use and the motivation they give to their peers and adults.
This project will continue to foster the ideas of The Compassion Project by requesting blank materials and stones that can be personalized with uplifting and thoughtful encouragement for their school family throughout the year. We will begin by reading the story "Scribble Stones" and apply the theme of the story and message of showing others compassion and kindness through creative expression by decorating and leaving rocks for those who need some encouragement.
These supplies will help my students connect with one another through discussions on why someone would need to be shown compassion and kindness by expanding their theory of mind and empathy. We would also love to start the year off, by placing encouraging quote stickers in the school staff mailboxes. These items will allow us to make custom and tangible gifts to show appreciation and kindness to others. This project will allow our students to see the world through the eyes of another person through creative expression, alleviate suffering by providing messages of encouragement, and show an understanding of compassion by recognizing a need in others and providing care through kindness.
