This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

"The only way to have a friend is to be one." - Ralph Waldo Emerson Compassion is a critical skill for children to learn. At my school, we use a program called Second Step and these books will enhance our current compassion and empathy lessons. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the word Compassion by creating books about kindness to share with people experiencing homelessness. We will read the compassion stories, and then use the stories to inspire stories to share with others. Students will learn that their voices, ideas, and writing can positively impact people around the community. During this project, students will also complete a book and canned food drive to share with a local agency supporting homeless community members.

I'd love to create a Compassion Table for students to work at when they need to work through situations and see life from another perspective.

Students will help customize the table with artwork and quotes. The shelf attached to the table would house the books on compassion and materials to execute compassion, kindness, and empathy activities throughout the day. Throughout the project, students will complete rating scales for their feelings about compassion and empathy. Students will also journal about their learning experiences. Upon completing the project, students will complete a survey to express their feelings about different topics related to compassion, empathy, and alleviating suffering.
