Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Every year, I make it a point to encourage my kiddos to perform random acts of kindness within our school. After discussing the importance of compassion as a group, the class will engage in writing to one another. The goal is to encourage students to write a letter to a friend about an upsetting situation they are facing or may face in the future, like moving to a new school, missing a pet, or losing a championship sports game. Then, the students will draft what a good friend would say in response to that letter. This compassion activity helps students understand how others feel and would respond as they see the world through the eyes of others. At the beginning of the school year, we create a kindness squad and put together a kids' corner to reward random acts of kindness with the requested school supplies.

In addition to the aforementioned writing activity we always set up kindness bulletin boards inside and outside of our classroom!

On them, students write positive sticky notes about their peers when they see them performing an act of kindness or showing compassion in helping others whether going through hard times, need assistance or words of encouragement. Student understanding of compassion will be measured by looking at the increase in number of kind stickies on these weekly. It is my intention to make the area bright and cheerful in order to encourage a welcoming environment both in and out of our classroom. The requested string lights will be used in these areas.

Also, in order to encourage the kiddos to show compassion to their peers, we will designate share times we can “catch” one another showing compassion. These will be tracked, charted and rewarded based on how many times they demonstrated compassion throughout the week.
