Compassion in Action: Backpacks of Hope

My Project

In this Compassion Project, students will engage in an empathy-centered experience by creating “Back to School” backpacks for disadvantaged youth who may be experiencing homelessness, living in temporary shelters, or are newly arrived immigrants to America. Through class discussions, storytelling, and reflection activities, students will explore the lived experiences of children facing these challenges and learn to see the world through their eyes. By stepping into the shoes of their peers who may lack basic school supplies or stability, students will deepen their understanding of how inequities can affect a person’s ability to succeed academically and socially.

With compassion as their motivation, students will collect and organize essential school supplies—including paper, pencils, pens, markers, colored pencils, glue sticks, and index cards—to create backpacks that bring hope and dignity to those in need.

These caring and thoughtful students will work collaboratively to ensure each bag is packed with both practical tools and heartfelt encouragement, including personalized notes to uplift the recipients. Success will be measured through reflection journals, classroom dialogue, and a student survey assessing growth in empathy, awareness, and compassionate thinking. This project empowers students to become change-makers, using kindness and action to make a real difference in someone else’s life.
