My after school community outreach program would like to do a community service project for our local DCS and foster care programs. They would like to make compassion bags for children that have been taken out of their homes by DCS and placed in an immediate foster care placement. This bag will hopefully bring a little bit of comfort to them. It’ll have a little bit of chocolate, a little bit of candy that is not chocolate, a few coloring pages, and either crayons or colored pencils, depending on their age, an inspirational note card, and a journal to write their thoughts. These items will be a bag that is decorated, by the students so these children will know that they are loved from someone in their community. These items will remind my students of how to help others students express their emotions and calm down within times of trials and anxiety. The goal of the project is to help my students help others. This specific project is targeted at helping children taken out of their homes, that are in the midst of turmoil to find a few moments of peace. I believe my students are special because they do have compassion for others, and they do want to share peace and joy with others.
