This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
As a 5th-grade teacher, I see my students navigating significant changes and learning to manage their emotions. To support them, I’m integrating compassion-focused activities that help foster an emotionally safe classroom environment and make emotional shifts easier for students. Our tools include card-making kits, a book, and snacks.
**Card Making Kits **: These kits encourage students to empathize with their peers by creating personalized cards for classmates experiencing difficulties.
This activity helps students understand others’ feelings and shows how their kind gestures can positively affect someone’s day.
**Empathy Book**: We'll use a book to discuss empathy, helping students understand different perspectives and experiences. Through real-life examples and scenarios presented in the book, students will learn to empathize and value the diversity within our community.
**Snacks**: Offering snacks addresses the immediate physical needs of hungry students and teaches them the importance of caring for others. Snacks can also serve as rewards for students who perform acts of kindness or compassion.
These resources are designed to help students see the world through others' eyes. I will assess how well students learn and apply compassion principles based on their acts of kindness and support towards one another.
