This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Compassion can be defined as the ability to recognize and alleviate the suffering of others. It involves a deep emotional response to the pain and struggles of others, coupled with a genuine desire to help, and support them. The question remains, is compassion genetically installed in us? Probably not, and that’s okay.
To have compassion is to show or be taught empathy and to be an educator is to show empathy and teach compassion.
As an advocate for my students, my project contains bulk items regarding hunger products such as, candy, chips and other snacks. Books about compassion are also included and stationary items to write letters and a tub tower to organize.
As most can agree, “seeing is believing” and I would love to model to students my compassion for them, by creating snack packs that they can benefit from. Meanwhile, with the left-over snack items, I will be having students put together a snack care package for others in need and explain how an act of kindness and empathy can be passed along through them. My goal is to motivate individuals to act in ways that benefit others and promote the common good. Though all students come from different backgrounds my hope is to use this common space, to prioritize kindness and empathy which may then lead students to exhibit compassionate behavior towards others.
To keep the compassion cycle going; with the pens and letters I will be using them to put together a pen pal station for students to handwrite letters to send to those who may need that little envelope of hope and light. Success will be measured not only by understanding the book’s contents but also by the growth and practice we witness in our students' ability to empathize and advocate for those in need.
