This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Media Center already has fiction and nonfiction books about kindness and compassion, but these new texts will help expand our collection. They are newly released, highly engaging books that the students will be able to use to see the world through the eyes of another person, particularly someone that comes from a different place in the world than them.
Students will then implement what they learn from both the fictional characters and the information from the nonfiction texts to demonstrate kindness and compassion within their classroom, our school, and the community.
After students answer the question, "What is compassion?" They will demonstrate their understanding of it by putting it into action. We will create cards for classmates and community helpers, add painted kindness rocks to our school's learning garden, exchange homemade friendship bracelets with peers, and create beautiful hallway displays that show empathy as well. This will help them see the world through the eyes of others and then show compassion to groups of people they learned about.
Implementing The Compassion Project's curriculum, in addition to our Second Steps SEL program should help our school's sense of unity increase, and our disruptive behaviors decrease.
