Comparing Amounts of Fertilizers in Mississippi Headwaters and Moline, Il

Help me give my students the materials needed to do a comparison study of Mississippi headwaters with that in our region in the Midwest. Students will test for nitrates and nitrites from fertilizers in river water samples.

My Project

Students will be conducting a comparison study of water samples from the Mississippi headwaters acquired in Minneapolis, Minnesota to those acquired in our region. Students will be testing for nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia that accumulate in the river water in both locations, along with the pH.

Fertilizers in rivers are a major source of pollution that can be harmful to wildlife and can accumulate in the water tables that humans use for drinking water.

Although fertilizers are necessary for the increase of crop production, runoff of fertilizers in waterways accumulates with spring rains. Pollution involving fertilizers can cause reproductive problems, weakened immune systems, and death to fish and other wildlife. Large amounts of nitrates in drinking water can affect how blood carries oxygen causing blue baby syndrome in humans.

Living in a rural farming region, fertilizer pollution is a concern that my students have been discussing in class. Being very curious, my students asked about the safety of the water in our area. I thought--let's test it! A couple of students will be traveling to Minneapolis for a science workshop. While there, they will acquire the Mississippi headwater samples used in the study. The goal of the project is to determine the amount of fertilizer pollution near the start of the Mississippi River to that of our area. This is a distance of 273 miles.
