This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Student's in my Rattler Guidance class are learning the skills to be successful students, and to be a valuable part of the community.
My students are part of a Title I school in North Las Vegas.
Over 74% of our students qualify for free-reduced-lunch, and our graduation rate is less than 50%. Only 16% of our students have earned at least one college credit through AP exams, compared to the state's average of 27%. My students are motivated to learn and succeed and deserve access to the tools that will aid their success. In our guidance class students must complete 10 hours of community service per semester in order to receive credit for the class. Without these hours, students fail the class.
My Project
By acquiring safety material (vests, gloves, caution tape) and sun protection (sunscreen, water jug) I want to provide my students with the opportunity to complete community service. Many of our students are unsure as to where to volunteer within the community, or do not have transportation to a non-profit to volunteer their time. With these supplies I want to give students access on the weekends to community service in their own community by cleaning up bike paths, multi-use walkways, and parks. This will serve as a method to teach students about the value of giving back to the community and provide an outlet for them to complete their community service.
I also believe that the best way to create clean communities is to create responsible members of that community. Students are far less likely to litter if they have actively participated in removing litter themselves.
This project is giving an at risk student population the tools necessary to learn the value of community service and increase their chance of success in high school by passing their guidance class.
In addition, it is teaching them to be life-long givers and stewards of their community. Through this project I hope to include students outside of my own guidance class and help students throughout the school to pass their class by providing an avenue to complete their community service.
