This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students on the student council noticed that students in their school building community have small crises throughout the day that result in disruptions to learning and stress. They also noticed that the teachers are often looking for tools to provide these students to help them. The students on the council noticed that often times another teacher or counselor is called into the classroom and they provide the students with small items that allow them to perform exercises quietly that help calm and focus their minds. Many times the students know what to do with the items, but they don't have access to them in their classrooms. Students on the student council suggested that the students in all classrooms in the building should have access to these same types of tools to help calm them when they need support with restoring their mental wellness during the day. As a result, they proposed getting the same types of items they've seen used by counselors and special teachers and creating a bucket of these sensory items for each classroom so that students can help restore their own mental wellness. They said tools shouldn't let everyone else see that they are going through something, and should be small.

For that reason they want the sensory wellness toolkits to include items such as bendy pencils so students can fidget but they are still using a pencil, or go through breathing exercises by smelling scented pencils, stickers, and erasers to support the amount of time to breath in and out to calm down, as well as simple fidgets so that less students have breakdowns.

They then want to go into the classrooms and demonstrate to the school community how they can use these tools to promote mental wellness and avoid feeling mentally overwhelmed in school.
