My Project
One of the greatest joys of teaching is witnessing the enthusiasm that comes out of project based learning. By the end of first semester, our class will create a writing anthology of original student works that will include the voices and experiences of youth growing up in our urban city. Students will be invited to interview family/community members while composing pictures of the cultural hubs of their local communities to go along with their research and writing projects. The pictures can be photographs, digital art, or hand drawn. However, instead of keeping the images on a device or digital format, I'd like to give my students the opportunity to hold a their final projects in their hands and see it in color in a printed anthology.
I hope it inspires students to embrace the diverse communities they come from while strengthening their confidence in skills like conducting research, reading, writing, and presenting their findings in a creative way.
A project such as this can be an encouraging springboard that motivates my students to enter local and nationwide writing contests for youth. A printer and ink is a giving that keeps on giving. We can also use the color printer for exciting ancient history projects as well!
