This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher librarian I work hard to ensure that the library is the heart of our school. Teachers come to collaborate on projects, students work together and hangout and reading is used as a way to foster empathy and relationship building.

My middle school is a vibrant and spirited place to learn.

We serve students from some of the most underserved and under-resourced neighborhoods in one of the country's richest cities. Students overcome so many obstacles just to come to school and learn each day. I am proud of their resiliency, determination, and enthusiasm. My school has a large newcomer pathway, which is a program that serves recent immigrants from about ten different countries. About 20% of the students receive special education services and about three-fourths get free and reduced lunch. About half of the students read at below grade level, yet are very enthusiastic readers and want to read more and to read better. The book clubs are a mix of teachers and students. Together they read the books and meet to discuss the books.

My Project

This project requests Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools, Manchild in the Promised Land, Enrique's Journey, The Glass Castle: A Memoir, and Choice Words: How Our Language Affects Children's Learning. These books are representative of many of the problems students encounter each day. The books can help encourage and inspire the students to overcome their obstacles while exposing teachers to some of the issues the students face each day. The conversations about the books are often hard but necessary. The students enjoy seeing their stories reflected in the books while providing a window to their lives to the teachers. Teachers have found these book clubs beneficial in building relationships with students. More importantly, teachers feel a sense of compassion for the student experience that translates to better teaching in the classroom.

I am inspired by Mala Yousafzai's quote, "Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world".

Books are an old technology that continues to inspire and connect different people. I have seen a teacher and a student unable to sit politely together in the same room. After a book club meeting, I have also witnessed these same people discuss their lives and ideas in a compassionate and meaningful way. Books and stories are powerful tools for learning.
