My Project

This project is to expose students to collaborative mural making. Our process usually starts with a student or students creating proposals for a the mural with only line art. One of those is chosen, then expanded on the canvases in line form only. After that, sets of canvases are spread across 6 different classes, with 3-4 students working on a canvas after seeing what the subject/line art of the mural will be. They don't know exactly which section they will be doing, so they are encouraged to be creative with their spaces. When the entire thing comes together it is like a massive mosaic.

Students adore working on canvas, but due to the cost, it is a rare occasion.

To circumvent the cost, we buy a set of canvas panels, work in groups, and reuse the canvases for multiple years. This allows us to create a community mural. The community mural brings students together to work as community to create a piece of art that can be displayed in multiple places throughout the year. The big reveal of the final piece is amazing. In each class we do a critique, mostly about communication and how we can better make the pieces seem more cohesive, which is something students work on all year long.
