My Students
Kindergarteners learn through dramatic play. I am beginning to teach about Community Helpers, and picture books are a great way to introduce these jobs. But my children need to explore these jobs through dramatic play. They need to hold the tools in their hands and wear the uniforms.
My students attend kindergarten at a public school in Virginia.
We have a diverse population with children from many different cultures and backgrounds. We also represent many socio-economic groups. My students prefer hands on learning and need opportunities to touch and explore the curriculum. Our dramatic play stations are a favorite among my students. They would love to have costumes and tools to enhance their learning at these stations.
My Project
My students will love to act out the roles of fire fighter, doctor, police officer, veterinarian, builder, and chef. They will be able to experience the jobs with authentic uniforms and tools, such as the collared shirt, hat, satchel, and letters from the mail carrier costume. They will be able to create a doctors office with a lab coat, stethoscope, and and thermometer. They will also practice their literacy skills with vocabulary cards. They will be reading content related vocabulary words, and practice writing these words through their role plays. They will write shopping lists before playing grocery store, create menus as they play restaurant, and check off exam forms at the doctor's office. In addition to practicing reading and writing skills, my students will be learning social studies benchmarks and practicing social skills.
My students and I would very much appreciate any additions to our dramatic play stations.
We use stations every day, so you will be making a daily impact on my students' learning. My students will gain a greater appreciation for community helpers, practice reading and writing skills, and learn social studies standards. Thank you for taking the time to view our project!
