My students need play dough, glue, and erasers as well as books about community helpers that depict authentic experiences but are still kid friendly and visually stimulating.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are always eager and ready to learn! They are a busy little group of kind, fun-loving, respectful five-year-olds. Each is different; each is unique.
Many speak another language as their primary language.
We are a very diverse group, allowing for the sharing and acceptance of different cultures. Most come from loving homes, but not all have access to quality educational materials. School is special and important to them for this reason. Many of my students have parents who did not receive a full K-12 education, but their parents are very active and involved in their education, as they understand the opportunities that an education can provide.
My Project
During our Heroes and Helpers unit, students learn how people work together to contribute to a community, and how many people have jobs that help everyone in the community.
These books are very kid friendly and will be placed in our Social Studies center, allowing for kindergarteners to explore the books at their own pace and immerse themselves in pretend play as community helpers.
Most of my kindergarteners have fewer than 20 books at home, so providing a literacy-rich environment that is both accessible and attractive to the students at school is vital to building a solid foundation in literacy, especially for my English Language Learners.
