Help me give my students the supplies they need to learn about plant life cycles! We need binders to organize our research, along with seeds, planters, and live plants to study the various ways plants can reproduce.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
These materials will support middle school students in their Community Garden Project! In this project, students will create a plan for a garden that can produce food for our classroom community. In order to create this plan, students need to learn how plants reproduce, how plants respond to their environments, and how traits are passed down from parent to offspring.
All of the students in this class are Emerging Bilingual Learners, which means hands-on projects are especially engaging when it comes to developing English language proficiency and scientific thinking.
As a class we will experiment with planting seeds in different environments, pollinating plants by hand, and propagating live plants to create clones.
In their final product, students will use their learning to think creatively about what foods they want to grow, how they can reproduce the plants to continue growing food, and how they can design the garden to be a place of joy and gathering. This project will allow students to do complex scientific thinking that is grounded in the real-world purpose of cultivating healthy food for their own community.
