I teach in a K-5 elementary building. Our students are inquisitive and ask thought-provoking questions with supportive parents. Typically most students who enroll in kindergarten spend their entire elementary career within our school. We are a school that prides itself on PBIS implementation and the home-school relationship. My school has also recently implemented AVID, which places emphasis on college and career readiness.
All of these support systems allow students to feel supported and more willing to learn.
We are raising lifelong learners at my school!
My Project
A common misconception is that older students don't like read alouds. My students will argue that our read aloud time is possibly their favorite part of the day! With our read alouds, we have great conversation, make connections, predict, and dive deeper into a text.
However, with only one teacher copy of a read aloud, it can be tricky to truly explore the text at all levels.
Students have to rely on their memories or the one copy of the book to cite appropriate text evidence. Too many times students are trying to remember a sentence or page number and miss the opportunity for critical thinking. When students have the text right in front of them, they will be able to follow along with me and can go back into the text anytime they need. With a class set of these novels, my students can truly grow as readers with their own text at their fingertips.
