Community Compassion Crayons - Part 3

Help me give my students a strong foundation in understanding culture, subculture, and appreciation for diversity using puppets and skin tone color art supplies.

My Project

My students will share and celebrate diversity with puppets and skin colored art supplies. Students will share and celebrate cultures in their world, community, and classroom. Students will engage in role playing using a set of diversity puppets. Some puppets will mirror students while other puppets will open a window of cultures and subcultures. Students will use puppets to mimic their own cultures and values and learn and appreciate the values of others. Students will be engaged in creative play, guided role play, as well as provide a unique nonthreatening way to share about their journal writings and discuss sensitive subjects from chapter books and picture books. Students will have the opportunity to mimic their skin tone and appreciate not only their outward appearance but their culture and values using art supplies and puppets. This project promotes pride in one’s heritage and values while creating an inclusive classroom atmosphere where every student feels seen and valued and students take these lessons into their very community.

Students will gain a deeper understanding of showing compassion to cultures and communities using puppets and art supplies that mirror their skin tone and open a window to show compassion and empathy for those who look very different.

Students will practice and learn ways to value and show compassion in the classroom and apply these skills with people in their community for years to come.
