My Students

Our elementary school is a neighborhood school filled with love, respect, creativity, and diversity. We "celebrate and challenge the unique potential in every child, value, honor and utilize individual differences, and create an environment that promotes a community of learners and nurtures the natural curiosity and wonder within each of us."

We have approximately 17 different nationalities represented in our school of 485 students.

The students are energetic, enthusiastic and eager to learn, explore, create and discover all that our world has to offer. Students' respect and genuine curiosity about their community, world, and their peers are a teacher's dream! Students are thrilled to learn about their peers' native languages, customs, and countries, which often drives my curriculum design. It's wonderful!

We, as a school, are committed to an authentic and hands-on learning environment. Our aim is to teach the whole child lifelong skills for learning, empathy and compassion to live a successful fulfilling life.

My Project

Innovative and inviting environments create eagerness within students. Flexible seating and group learning environments are an integral part of a classroom. During art class, students have many different working areas. Currently, students choose a location in the art room that works best for them, whether that be a table, stool/desk, or on the community rug. Our art classes gather on the rug to learn art history, art techniques, give critiques, and so much more! Students respond positively and are engaged when an environment is both flexible, comfortable and warm.

The rug will play many roles in the program for students.

The product I have selected will help my students by giving them additional flexible seating and also, ample seating during our group time. The carpet is large, 9'x12', and will accommodate up to 30 students comfortably. This rug will give students a warm, comfortable and safe alternative to the new concrete floor.

I have seen how a comfortable learning area impacts and positively affects students' work and mindfulness and hope the addition of a larger rug will engage and inspire the world's future artists!
