My Project

Our high school, located on the stunning Big Island of Hawaii, is a close-knit community of diverse students who embody the essence of aloha.

Surrounded by the island's natural beauty, they foster a deep appreciation for the environment. Their dedication to academics is complemented by a strong sense of balance, mutual support, and collaboration. These students excel in both their studies and extracurricular activities, from water sports to community service, showcasing their competitive spirit and commitment to giving back. The students encapsulate the spirit of Hawaii, blending cultural diversity, academic excellence, environmental consciousness, and a strong sense of community, all with the warmth and inclusivity of aloha.

Cardboard recycling in our county, an issue at the intersection of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), is both costly and environmentally taxing due to transportation.

Hawaii's primary waste solutions, encompassing elements of STEM, include export, incineration, and landfill, with organics, such as cardboard and paper, significantly contributing to costs and carbon emissions. The post-COVID era has heightened food security concerns, reliant on imported agricultural inputs, calling for innovative STEM solutions.

Our answer is a community-level STEM-oriented organics recycling prototype using compost. It fosters economic development, reduces the carbon footprint, and enhances food systems with the help of STEM. The prototype, this mobile cardboard shredding system designed using STEM principles, repurposes cardboard and paper into mulch for compost and packaging material. It aims to gauge community interest, verify feasibility and costs, and emphasize the systemic STEM benefits of localized organic recycling and disposal.
