Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This years group of students entering the 5th grade are excited and eager to learn and be leaders of their campus. These children are still not reading at grade level, and learning to read fluently will be something our class strives for this next school year.

These children live in rough parts of their community and we are a Title 1 school, where all children are receive free lunch.

Despite the challenges and disadvantages in their home lives, I am striving to provide them the best education I can. With your help, we will have access to a community rug and alternative classroom seating for literacy practice.

Children who come from rough communities and are lower income tend to have outside stressors in their daily lives that all too often carry over into the classroom. Learning is especially challenging when children have these stressors in their life. Respecting my students backgrounds, I have found community circle and social skill building to be of great importance in our school. Each morning we sit on the floor together, and need a rug to comfortably do so.

Students also enjoy exploring their classroom and reading in various spots and getting comfortable. I want my students to not only learn to read fluently but to develop a love to read like myself.

I hope with our community working together, I will be able to gift my students access to materials we otherwise would not have.
