My students need an iPad to make therapy activities more engaging and motivating. They will gain technology literacy skills while improving communication skills!
I work with Seattle Public School students in elementary through high school on a wide range of communication skills. From learning to speak more clearly to learning to advocate for themselves, my students will benefit from the growth opportunities to which the iPad can contribute.
I currently serve Seattle Public School students in grades 1-11 with communication disorders which get in the way of learning and participation at school.
I work with many medically fragile & physically impaired nonverbal students learning alternative and augmented communication, students on the autism spectrum, students with receptive, expressive, and social language disorders, students with learning disorders, students learning speech sounds, and students who stutter.
Each student brings a unique set of strengths and needs.
My Project
Students will be able to use communication therapy-specific apps which will target their individual IEP goals. Communication therapy services happen all throughout the school building, so the iPad will provide a portability to speech/language therapy activities while being engaging and motivating.
Data will be able to be taken online more quickly in sessions, allowing more time to be spent on learning and instruction time.
Additionally, the students will learn technology skills while using the iPad for communication, which will build good real-world job and work skills.
An iPad in the communication room will allow for flexibility, creativity, portability, and reliability.
My students will be more engaged, whether using it for learning or as a reinforcement for work, and will be more motivated to get to learning.
While it will never be the entire lesson, an iPad will add many features to my lessons that will improve and increase learning and make students' communication skills grow exponentially.
