This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
East Palo Alto is a mix of many different cultures and languages. I am very fortunate to be a part of this community. While it is important to learn English, it is also important to feel welcomed to a school and feel a part of our school community. Language can be a huge barrier in our learning environment in the classroom and with families in the neighborhood.
With a translator device, I can open the line of communication with my students and their families, helping them to feel a part of our school and neighborhood community.
Many of our students are English Language Learners. They are learning English while maintaining their native language. While I speak some Spanish, sometimes, it is not enough. I try to empower my other students to speak for me and with me as we learn together. It is my hope that this translator will help me to be a better communicator with my students and open my doors to our families as they learn English and about our school community.
