This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever really wanted to express something but didn't have the words to say? Imagine having autism or some other disability and having the ability to use a device such as an IPOD touch to communicate but not having the money or access to this technology? What if all that it took was that?
My students have disabilities ranging from Autism to down syndrome.
We are in a title one school district meaning that our students face some of the most difficult economic challenges. They deal with many difficult situations amongst their families and are some of the most amazing, wonderful people I have ever been around. Most of them have so much to say and so many things that they want get out, however finding the way to get that information out is one of a teachers biggest challenges.
My Project
Research around the use of IPOD touches in the classroom as a means of communication is becoming more and more available. COMMUNICATION IS A CRUCIAL part of any person''s life and my job is to unlock that and create many effective ways for my students to get out what they need to get out. When a student has a way to communicate their maladaptive behaviors decrease making them more fit to get jobs, make friends and to go out into their communities. The IPOD touch also has other downloadable features including a Discrete trial way of teaching certain vocabulary words and concepts. The student is simply given choices, touches the object and the ipod says the name of that object. It can also project a voice giving a student without one a way to communicate with his/her friends. It attracts the general education population making the student popular because he/she is up to date with technology and gives me an opportunity to help facilitate the use of this device.
Oftentimes in my district, my classroom sets the tone for many other people/classrooms in my district and even further out.
After use of this in my classroom, I will be able to continue to spread the word of its success with my students and spread the word to others. This device will give many hours of learning, motivation, socialization and maybe even a voice to my students. EVERY student will benefit from this IPOD, including general education students who are learning about my students!
