My students need ink for our printer to personalize communication boards for our Go Talks and to personalize communication boards to help them access the core curriculum.
Some students with special needs have difficulty learning to talk and others don't speak at all. Alternative Communication is a way to help my students express their thoughts, needs and ideas. They use their personalized, colorful boards with pictures and symbols to increase communication.
Our campus is a specialized campus in California that provides specialized instruction to students with moderate to severe learning disabilities.
My students are extremely special individuals who will touch your heart and make you fall in love at first meeting. My classroom consists of fourteen students aged from 19-20 years old with a variety of disabilities (Down Syndrome, Autism, and Intellectual Disabilities). Their disability in communication prevents them from accessing all the content areas of the core curriculum. My students have a desire to learn and communicate with their friends, family and peers with the help of communication boards.
My Project
I am requesting 4 cartridges of toner for our network printer so that I can personalize the communication boards that my students use every day. Our network printer requires 4 cartridges to make colorful boards. Color-coding the picture communication boards allows the students to locate symbols more easily. When color-coding is organized according to grammatical categories, the students have an added feature to assist in learning how to sequence symbols, and in turn, to support the development of sentence-building or syntax skills.
This project supports functional spontaneous communication and facilitates inclusion as well as independence at home, school, and community for my non-verbal students.
It helps to provide a voice for students who are unable to speak.
