Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In my special education classroom, I work with a diverse group of students, many of whom are nonverbal or in the process of developing functional communication skills. To support their growth, I implement a variety of consistent, engaging activities designed to reinforce communication in meaningful ways. A key component of our learning involves the use of books, which serve as powerful tools for practicing expressive and receptive language. While digital resources like YouTube are helpful in providing access to stories and read-alouds, I have found that my students are more focused and engaged when they have physical books in their hands. This tactile and visual experience enhances their ability to connect with the content and participate more actively in communication-based activities.
Providing physical books in the classroom not only supports literacy but also plays a critical role in promoting functional communication.
The act of turning pages, pointing to pictures, and referencing specific parts of the book gives my students more opportunities to express their needs, label objects, and make choices—skills that are essential for their independence and social development. By integrating books into our daily routine, I create structured opportunities for language practice that are both predictable and meaningful. This approach ensures that each student, regardless of their verbal abilities, has a way to participate, learn, and grow through consistent and accessible literacy experiences.
