My students need a two-way radio at their disposal to feel safe. We need to be able to communicate with one another during emergencies.

My Students
During the May 20th tornado our school lost the use of the intercom system. As we had our students taking tornado precautions we tried to communicate with our principal and other teachers in the building with two-way radios. Unfortunately, there were not enough radios for all of the teachers.
Most of our students come from low income families and receive free or reduced lunches.
The students showed their bravery on the afternoon of May 20th as we huddled together in the hallways of our school. At our school we strive to make the environment as safe as possible and we hope that such an event as the May 20th tornado never happens again. However, we also want to always be prepared and learn from the experience we had that day. The lesson learned is that communication is key and when our typical source of communication is unavailable we need to have a back-up plan. It is imperative for each teacher to have a two-way radio at their disposal.
My Project
On May 20, 2013 when the destructive tornado approached we realized what our school lacked in safety. Around 2:00 pm parents started arriving at school to check their child out of school. At this same time, the office staff realized we had lost the use of our intercom system. That is when we tried to relay information down the hallways of our school. Two-way radios seemed to be the most efficient form of communication we had available to us at the time. However, there was only one 2-way radio available in each grade level with some that did not work at all. So communication between the office and the teachers was chaotic at best.
We need a two-way radio in every classroom in our school to help provide safety for our students in any and every emergency situation that occurs.
This project is requesting one 2-way radio, however other teachers from our building will be requesting more in order to complete our need.
