Do you know how hard it is to ask for something you want, but you do not have the words to ask for it? My students have no easy way of expressing themselves.
My students come from a tough neighborhood in NYC.
They have various and multiple special needs and have a very difficult time learning basic skills. They struggle every day trying to communicate their wants and needs. I am a Speech-Language Pathologist and from my experience, these kids would benefit from having pictures and communication blocks (that would speak) all over the school to help them communicate and to help them understand the world around them. Having visual symbols in their environment will significantly reduce student frustration, and decrease the amount of time teachers spend trying to figure out what the students want, and increase teachable moments throughout the day. I work closely with the classroom staff but we are in great of materials to help our students.
Many of my students do not use words to communicate and with the availability of talking blocks, pocket folders and laminating sheets to make our materials last longer, I will be able to place colorful symbols (talking blocks) and pictures all over the school, including their classrooms and lunchroom to help them communicate their basic wants and needs. Having these materials will mean that I will be able to provide each student who is not yet speaking (or minimally speaking) a way to express if they are hungry, need the bathroom, want a book. The basic things that every child should have access to.
Your donation will make a significant impact in the lives of the students I work with by providing them with something they haven't yet be able to master, but it is their right to be able to express their basic wants and needs.
A color printer with ink cartridges will allow me to print colorful images for every student to be able to express their wants in their own capacity.
