Communication Devices - So EVERY Voice Can be Heard

My Students
Like typical middle school students, my students are smart, kind, passionate, and funny. Their interests range from music to football to video games to reading to hanging out with friends.
Unlike typical middle school students, my students often aren't able to communicate their wants, needs, opinions, frustrations, and feelings to their teachers and their classmates.
As verbal communicators, we often take for granted being able to ask for water when we are thirsty, a break when we are frustrated, or help when we aren't able to complete a task. Many of my students' behaviors are related to not being able to communicate effectively.
While some of my students do communicate verbally, others are learning to communicate through pictures and symbols. Building language though pictures takes time and practice, just like building verbal language does. Topic boards and communication book pages give my students access to picture language, but can only offer a limited vocabulary. Many of my students are less motivated by pictures on a paper that do not say the words out loud that they want to communicate to teachers, classmates, and family.
My Project
My students will use these iPad Minis with the app TouchChat HD AAC, "a full-featured communication solution for individuals who have difficulty using their natural voice." TouchChat allows students to build phrases and sentences from a picture vocabulary bank and then "say" the sentence aloud using the voice output function.
These devices will give my students a voice.
They will be able to express their wants and needs, comment on their environment, and interact with their classmates. They will be able to participate in group discussions and conversations with friends. They will be able to use these devices in academic, leisure, social, and prevocational settings.
They will have the opportunity to practice expanding their language from single words to phrases and sentences. They will be able to express when they are happy or frustrated or sad or bored, just like their verbal middle school peers. These devices will open doors for my students.
