My Students
I am a speech-language pathologist working in an urban school, serving students from PreK through 4th grade. All the children I work with have a variety of strengths and needs on the autism spectrum. My students are from diverse backgrounds; including rich cultures and different socioeconomic statuses.
Distance learning will be challenging, but with some fun materials I can help my students and families be successful!
My Project
My students have a variety of communication skills, strengths, and needs. Many of the children on my caseload are beginning communicators, and during distance learning I want to help them and their families have more opportunities to learn and practice communication throughout their day.
I want to make communication at home fun!
Many of the families of my students have limited access to toys in their homes. Providing them with some simple, yet effective materials will be very helpful when we are meeting online and working on communication. Typically when I am teaching requesting and commenting skills I will use highly reinforcing objects. Bubbles, fidget toys, pop tubes, and flashing spinners will all be helpful in this endeavor. I am requesting duplicates of most of the materials so I can share with multiple families. A document camera will be a great addition when I am trying to share materials with students and families (visuals, books, directions, etc.). I will be providing live and recorded lessons as well during distance learning, and having a flexible stand for my phone will make it easier for me to create those videos.
