My Students

The students that I have the blessing to work with daily are extensions of their community. They are predominately students of color who come from environments farrowed with barriers to their development. These barriers are included but are not limited to mental health needs such as stress, trauma, anxiety, and social-emotional deficits. 85% of my student population receive free or reduced-cost lunch and more than half are below grade level with regards to academic proficiency. They need support to improve their overall outcomes. Resources however can be difficult to come by and funding even more so. My students require a unique approach and delivery when providing them the support that nurtures their ability for healthy self-expression.

My Project

A significant barrier to supporting the English Language Learners student and parent population is the language barrier. Having these voice translator devices will allow the School Support staff to engage immediately with our ELL students and their guardians, increasing our ability to provide them academic, social-emotional, and personal support directly. It will also allow the support staff to communicate with parents of our ELL students when they present to the building, as we do not have a bilingual staff member on site that can support with this incredibly high need. These devices can help us respond to the language barrier.
