My school has many newcomer students who cannot speak English. I would like to have them visit a real pottery studio and learn to communicate in clay. I am a guidance counselor for English as Second Language students. The students have no money (nor do their parents). There are 10 students who would participate in 8 weeks of instruction on communication in clay. This includes 40 lbs of clay, tools, and a potter's time of 90 minutes for 8 weeks (12 hours) and kiln-firing of the finished product. I will furnish the transportation to the site and translators for the potter's instructions to the students. I want the students to have this experience to feel good about themselves during the transition time between feeling non-communicative and communicating in English. The first activity for the students will be to have the potter come into the class to show the students the finished clay products (ceramic objects) and demonstrate the techniques used in hand building clay bowls. The wheel throwing technique will be demonstrated when arriving at the potter's studio. The potter has eleven wheels and each student will use the wheel to practice the wheel turning techniques. Being able to communicate through the use of clay will benefit the students because they will gain knowledge without a lot of "speech". They will be able to express themselves through the potter's wheel and see their project through to the final product to proudly take home. Thank you for your response!
