This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education autism preschool teacher. I currently have 12 students in my class, but that number increases throughout the year. I work at a low-income elementary school. Half of our student population is made up of general education students, and the other half is made up of students in our autism program. Our focus is on the individual student and centers on their ability to gain basic learning readiness skills and acquire academic, play, social, communication, and self-help skills.

The ability to play is a major skill deficit of children with autism.

All skills that my students need to inquire is learned through play. We not only teach them how to play appropriately but work on other areas such as communication, academic skills, and social interaction.

My Project

Visuals are a necessity! This project will help me be able to create the visuals to help with comprehending stories and building on their communication skills. The books, velcro, lamination pouches, ink, and games will help cover each of my students' areas of needs. I purchased a kit provides the visuals for each book in this project. However, the kit does not come assembled. That is where the velcro, ink, and lamination pouches come in handy.

The games will help my students work on taking turns, sharing, and commenting.

I try to keep learning fun in my class. My students respond well to games. The few games that I do have are ready to be retired. Plus, it's good to keep the students interested in the lesson. It helps to have new, exciting games.
