Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The motto at our school is “Supporting Student Strengths with Passion, Purpose, and Professionalism.” This project focuses on fostering students’ strengths by exposing students to cause and effect activities via coding materials! I created this project because my students have a need for a fun way to develop pre-linguistic communication skills through a variety of engaging methods. Many of the Special Education students I work with come from limited resources and have behavioral, medical, and academic needs. Some of the students live in group/foster homes and it can be a challenge to find motivating activities that will engage them. In addition many students enjoy hands-on learning materials that they can manipulate.

These coding materials requested would provide motivating activities and a hands-on way to learn cause and effect through play based activities.

These coding activities will allow our students to access their curriculum in unique ways with support including VODs, picture icons, gestures, AAC technology, vocalizations, verbalizations, communication core boards, and other functional methods of communication. Students would also develop receptive and expressive language along with pragmatic skills as they work with peers through play based language activities.

My Project

According to Dr. Karyn Purvis, "scientists have recently determined that it takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain-unless it is done with play, in which case, it takes between 10-20 repetitions."

Play based therapy is critical for students who are learning cause and effect pre-linguistic skills because it is a motivating and engaging way for beginning communicators.

These coding activities will provide just the right amount of structure in a play based language environment.

The Fisher-Price Think & Learn Code-a-pillar Twist would benefit all preschool students, but especially those with visual impairments. Not only does this item have programmable movements, but also incorporates music. Auditory stimulation is a huge motivator for our students.

The Learning Resources Coding Critters: Ranger & Zip, Rumble & Bumble, and Scamper & Sneaker would pair perfectly with different themes throughout the year, but also provide key pragmatic skills as students continue to build their receptive and expressive skills.
