Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 55 students live in an impoverished area of Los Angeles. Their ages range from preschool to 5th grade. Some of my students have difficulty communicating what they want, some have difficulty accessing the school curriculum because of their language delays and some have speech delays that prevent them from being understood by their teachers and peers.
I feel so fortunate to have worked with Miramonte students for over a year.
I always see huge smiles on their faces whenever I pick them up from clases to take them to a speech session.
My Project
I am constantly thinking of ways to engage my students in order to help them communicate. It can be through fun images that demonstrate correct placement of our articulators, in order to help my students make their sounds correctly. It can be through image boards that help my nonverbal students communicate by pointing to pictures. It can also be through social scene images (people doing activities at a park or in their home) to help my students with inferencing, finding context cues, answering WH questions and predicting.
I have found that my students are most engaged when the materials I present to them are in color.
While I feel very lucky to have access to a printer at the school I work in, the printer is a black and white printer. With the TPT gift card, I can purchase materials that can target and support my students communication goals. A color printer would make a world of difference for the students and for this Speech and Language Pathologist!
