I strive to foster independence in my students, which allows them to have a sense of pride and feelings of accomplishment. This encourages problem-solving when my students will be faced with challenges in the future.
I teach in a classroom where half of the day instruction is in English, and half of the day instruction is in Spanish.
I have both native Spanish and native English speakers in my class, as well as students who speak many other languages at home. In our class, my students are becoming readers and writers in both Spanish and English! Our diverse students love to learn!
My Project
Our school has many students whose parents speak Spanish. We have some excellent resources in our district already in place. We have bilingual staff and amazing translators. At our school, we view knowing a second (or third) language as a huge asset and always encourage families to speak their home language.
Almost half of the families I teach speak Spanish at home.
Teachers are often the first point of contact when families ask for help or resources. I would love to be able to communicate better with my students' families. I have the basics down for speaking beginning Spanish but I would love to expand my professional development by increasing my Spanish language skills.
