Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every summer I mail out a supply list to my incoming students' families. I request that each child bring in all of the supplies on the list on the first day of school. However, working in a school where over three-quarters of my students qualify for free lunch, I know it's hard for their families to provide them with what they need to start school. While there are always a few kids whose parents can provide them with all of the supplies, they are in the minority.
Please note: students use communal supplies in my classroom. That means all of the children will share pencils, lined paper, sticky notes, art supplies, etc. Communal supplies save students time since they don't roam around asking, "May I borrow your _____?" Further, communal supplies eliminate distractions since materials are stored in a central location of the classroom so there is less in and on students' desks.
Due to the financial hardships that nearly all of my students' families face, I desperately need your help to make sure all of my new fifth-grade students can start school with brand new supplies. Starting the year with supplies donated by you will make them productive and prepared from the very first moment they set foot inside my classroom.
Thank you, in advance, for your generosity.
