My students need an iPad to see the Common Core practice assessments and teaching materials on the web.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Bubbles be gone! Bubble tests are officially now a thing of the past in California. Students will be required to demonstrate mastery of standards via online exams. We are just getting our feet wet by downloading paper versions of this exam but these are not sufficient. An iPad will help prepare us.
My students are predominantly English learners who are on free or reduced lunch status.
They are eager learners with parents who work hard, but who lack the education and income to provide the level of support their children need. The community is very involved in the schools, as the schools are the only civic entity available to them in this small unincorporated city. In honor of their commitment to education, we as teachers try to create an engaging educational experience for the students as possible. Of all the students I teach, only a quarter of the students have direct access to technology for learning and homework purposes. My ability to expose the students to technology and to model its educational use is a duty I need fulfill.
My Project
At this time, my school district is upgrading our Internet infrastructure in order to prepare for the upcoming national assessments. In spite of this development, the cost of providing teachers with the technology necessary is beyond daunting. It has been recommended that a good starting point would be to have one iPad to project for the students so that they can have access to the online testing materials and be exposed to the online format. I would access the websites, project them on our white board, and have students interact with the assessments by writing their answers on paper. In this way, students can glean the benefit of seeing what the exam will be like.
Poor, urban schools have always struggled to keep up with more affluent ones.
Organizations like DonorsChoose attempt to make the playing field level by impacting these types of schools in a positive way. Allowing my students the opportunity to engage in lessons geared toward a national exam that will compare them to students across the country will be invaluable. A simple tool in the hands of someone who has been trained to use the technology effectively could have a significant effect.
