My Students

What is better than teaching kids to love reading and to instill in them the desire to be life-long learners? My class is excited about the possibilities these new books could bring!

Reading is the key to preparing our students to be successful in the future.

We need your help in order to provide our students with the books they need to be successful. Good readers = great students! Can you remember reading as a child? The books we are hoping to get will be appreciated! We are located in a small, rural town in upstate New York. Many of our students come from low-income, disadvantaged homes. Books are not found in many of our students' homes. The school is the primary way our students are exposed to reading opportunities. Our school and community were recently affected by flooding and new books are not able to be purchased. Will you help us?

My Project

We need several novels in order to create reading opportunities for our students. These books are: The Lightning Thief, Peter and the Starcatchers, and The Hobbit (one of my favorite classics). We will also be using Where the Red Fern Grows (I love this book), but we already have copies of those that I have purchased over the years. We are also hoping to get the listening CDs so that at times the kids will be able to listen to the story. This will help them develop fluency as they follow along. Fluency helps aid comprehension. As we read each novel, the students will work together on classroom activities and individually on writing assignments. Thank you for being a part of Donorschoose.org.
