My Students
When I hear students talking amongst themselves about books, I mean really talking about books, I know that our literature program is working.
My students attend a rural school that focuses on project-based learning.
Through our literature program, students immerse themselves in fantastic worlds of fantasy and intrigue. They not only learn about several important literary concepts, but complete projects based on literature, often in teams, which results in qualitative learning experiences.
My Project
My students will read The Witch of Blackbird Pond and A Christmas Carol, with me in class (read-aloud). The remainder of the books will be read in "literature tribes", which are my version of book clubs. Several of the titles are specifically aligned with the new Common Core State Standards and/or exemplar books for said standards. In any event, they're all really good.
My students don't use a language arts textbook.
I use literature as my main means of exploring literary concepts, and equally important, to build an unwavering interest in reading. I want my students to enjoy and learn from books that they'll still remember when they're 25. I love the books on this list and I recommend them to DonorsChoose contributors too!
