My Students

Think back to your childhood - what are the books that you remember loving the most? From Judy Blume to Roald Dahl, so much literature sticks with us throughout our lives. I want to give this opportunity to my students!

My students are wonderful 3rd graders living throughout the city of New Orleans.

Most of the students live in poverty, with over 90% of our students' receiving free or reduced lunch. While I have only had the opportunity to teach this group for 3 weeks, they are a great class of students that absolutely LOVE to read. I have students ranging from reading on a 3rd grade level and above down to students reading on a pre-kindergarten level.

My Project

With the move to common core standards, I need to push my students to an even higher reading level. Right now, they are required to leave 3rd grade at a level O or P (end of 3rd grade/beginning 4th), but common core has them leaving at R/S/T (currently beginning of 5th grade, soon to be end of 3rd grade). The tough part is, many of my students are only reading at an H/I/J (Kindergarten) and have to work twice as hard to get up to grade level by the end of the year! I'm hoping with these books, I am able to inspire my students to read books that are a little above grade level, but are of high interest to get them hooked on literature, which will in turn help them grow at double or triple the rate that they normally would grow in a given school year.

This donations will allow my students to conduct literature circles and guided reading with literature that my students' will absolutely love.

The intention is that with these books, they'll be able to grow 2 or more years in reading in a single school year!
