The Common Core is coming to schools near you, including my classroom. With limited funding and limited materials, our classroom needs books to help transition to these new, rigorous standards. These books will lay the foundation for each of the units we will be covering this year.
I teach at a public school, in which 95% of students receive free or reduced price lunch.
With class sizes of 26 students or more, it can be difficult to meet the needs of each student. Parents and teachers alike have few resources, but we are dedicated to creating an exceptional educational experience for our students. Donors could help provide the essential resources to these students which would engender a fervor for learning, rather than frustration.
My Project
This project encompasses a wide range of books recommended by both the Common Core and Louisiana Department of Education as a foundation for reading units in the new third grade curriculum. Students will be exposed to nonfiction and fiction texts as they prepare to not only succeed on their end of year assessments, but also begin to learn skills applicable to their success in college.
The year will start with books focusing on the importance of learning and the varied experience of education throughout the world. Students will then be exposed to texts which remind them to be aware of our impact on the environment, through units on animals and natural resources. We will continue the year learning about the past through fairy tales, fables, and folktales, as well as books specifically about Louisiana history. Finally, students will learn to cope the transition to fourth grade through stories of friendship and empathy.
The impact of these resources on my students and school is immeasurable.
Without having the funding or the library to support the new common core curriculum, our classroom is not ready to embrace these new standards. These texts will expose students to many new lessons about the world beyond their hometown, by exploring a variety of subjects.
These books will be used as the basis for our units for the ENTIRE YEAR and will be an excellent resource for myself and my students alike!
