Commedia dell'arte mask making!

My students need to learn about commedia dell'arte. One of the ways I do this is by having the students make masks to go with the scripts they write based on the commedia characters.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Lopez's classroom raised $341

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students that I teach come from an eclectic background. A few are from 2 parent upper middle class but most are considered working poor families or part of the foster care system. But all of them enjoy the performing arts and find it a way to communicate and empathize with each other.

The students in my theatre program work diligently to make the program interesting and helpful to their school and community.

Students can participate in a number of shows and competitions. All of which help students realize the power of their voice.

My Project

Every year in my theatre classes my students learn another part of theatre history. My beginning students learn about Greek theatre. They learn how the shows were produced, script structure of the time and costuming of the shows. My intermediate students learn about Shakespeare. They expand their theatre history knowledge by learning more in dept information about Shakespeare and his productions. Then my advanced theatre students take what they have learned from their experience with theatre history and improv. They then write scripts based on this information in the commedia dell'arte style and make masks to go with each character.

These supplies will be used for students to make long lasting masks for their commedia dell'arte performance.

After the class performance we hope to incorporate them into our advanced theatre show. I love this assignment because students not only learn more about theatre but they also show what they have learned from their English, History and even Art class. Students will use the plastic masks as molds for their masks. They will put plastic wrap on them them use the dough to form their masks. After they dough drys and hardens students will then use the paint and brushes to decorate their masks according to their written scripts. By using the plastic masks as molds it will allow us to have more supplies for all students in every class and even the club. The brushes can also be reused as well. This will minimize the need to replenish supplies so frequently in the future.
