Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are scholars, athletes, musicians, chess players, manga and anime fanatics, cheerleaders, artists, runners, and volunteers. They participate in all kinds of clubs and activities. They are funny, quirky, and curious. Some are learning English. Many are looking forward to college and careers. They take great pride in our school.

I try to create a welcoming environment for them filled with materials/resources that meet the needs of as many students as possible.

As a high school librarian I see avid readers, non-readers, and every type of reader in between. Wherever my students begin, my goal is to help them grow and expand as readers, writers, thinkers, and dreamers.

My school is a Title I school with students qualifying for free meals. Many of my students do not have a quiet, comfortable place to read at home. While most of my students can decode words on a page, many have not developed a love of or passion for reading. They have not found that special book, that "home run" book that changes the course of their reading lives.

My students like the coffee house vibe we are trying to create in our library; an atmosphere of joy and inquiry prevails.

My Project

Whenever a popular young adult novel is made into a movie, there is a crush of students in our library clamoring for the book! "But Miss, I have to read it before I see the movie," they say. The Miseducation of Cameron Post, The Darkest Minds, and Everyday, are going to be mega popular and in demand. I want to be ready.

It is really exciting when a reluctant reader comes in to find the book because they saw a movie trailer or heard about it from a friend, or their favorite actor is in it.

These novels will appeal to a wide variety of students and I know they will fly off the shelves. Reading is power!
