My Students
The theme of my Freshmen English class (approximately 90 students separated into 3 periods) is Coming of Age. Students are encouraged to make personal connections to material presented to them and their peers. They participate in discussions and are given activities to help them think critically.
My students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
Our school encourages critical thinking through strategies such as p4c (Philosophy for Children). Our students understand their value to the world and are encouraged to recognize they have the ability to create positive change.
My Project
Students will use the novel in our Coming of Age in Changing Times Unit. In this unit we will set the context with reading of Jim Crow laws and various civil rights pieces in a variety of formats. Students will also read To Kill a Mockingbird analyzing the theme of Coming of Age. Their final assignment will call for them to make connections between themselves and the material we have studied.
Donations to this project will help students access the material needed to fully participate in the unit.
Donations will take off much of the financial stress due to purchasing needed copies using personal funds. Donations will directly be used purchase copies of To Kill a Mockingbird allowing students to be exposed to classic literature and understand a world, still relevant today, but somewhat foreign to many teenagers.
